3rd August: Not This Time
August 3rd, 2009 by Jake
It is with sadness but pride that I must tell you all that Jake and three others (Wim and the two Pauls) were forced to turn back halfway to camp 4 and return to Camp 3.
I do not know the full story, only that these four have safely returned to C3 whilst the other four (Matt having already decided to return to Base Camp yesterday) have successfully made it to C4 and are planning to go for the summit tomorrow as planned whilst Jake and the others will descend back down to BC. According to Chris, who telephoned me from BC today, Jake may have had a problem with his O2 equipment. Whatever the cause, I am immensely proud of him.
It takes a lot of courage to realise that the real prize will not be achieved and to make that decision to turn back. Life really is too precious and no matter what the short term goals may be achieved, the long term risks are simply not worth it.
My heart goes out to him and the others who turned back. I have only the very best wishes to extend to Fabrizio and I truly hope that he and the other three will be safe and successful; but my prayers are with Jake and for his safe return down the mountain.
I hope to speak to Jake tomorrow and will let you know more as I learn it. No doubt he will write a full report in due course.
