1st July

July 1st, 2009 by Jake
So, as you probably guessed from the content of the previous blog, chronicling our epic escape from C1 in the midst of the storm, that we are now in a storm cycle. It's how it seems to go up here, a few days of relatively good weather, and then a few days of awful weather. Obviously we try and get as much done during the good weather, but then watch as in a few hours, days of trail breaking is covered up by a dump if snow during a storm. Last night the storm came to BC, and when we eventually decided to raise our heads this morning to take stock, we were greeted with up to 12 inches of snow in places. It was still very blustery as we all convened for breakfast in the mess tent, everyone fully suited and booted in down jackets and booties (if you were intelligent enough to pack them). Pancakes for breakfast were very good, before most of us retired to the communal dome tent to while away the morning in it's relative safety and comfort. The Marmot Lair dome tent, aka the leisure dome, the fart factory or the game's station is our place of refuge during the day at BC. Whether you want to play cards, Scrabble, Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, listen to an ipod on speakers, or just eat snacks (those Wasabi and soy Almonds were delicious), in the friendly company of other team members, the dome is the place to be. Warmer than the millennium Dome (and only marginally smaller or less expensive), we've kitted it out with large foam sheets all over the floor, and so it heats up a treat during the day when the sun us out. Within minutes of entering wearing full down protective outer gear, most of us our tearing off our layers in the sauna-like environment. Unfortunately, as well as catching the heat of the sun, it also seems to savour the odour of all of us trumping away all day, which gives it a delicious atmosphere that reminds me of the first year dorm rooms at school.

After lunch (the wind had died down mid morning and the sun had come out in all its resplendent glory), a couple of us built a very lifelike and life-sized snow bear. She is to scare off a certain member of another team, who scares us all due to their overtly aggressive behaviour to us. Anyway, enough playground gossip - I better get back to my busy schedule of 'rest' today. Honestly, some people think that this expedition lark is easy...=

Great dispatches! Between you and Sean and FTA site we’re getting a great sense of the expedition. Keep those rowdy Spaniards in line! Best wishes for good weather and a safe and successful climb.
