Wednesday 24th June

It was with a certain trepidation of today's tasks that we met for an early breakfast to sort out specific jobs and a system for the recovery of Mikaela. Unfortunately, it wasn't going to be possible to get a helicopter in today, and so we would have to temporarily bury him at the bottom of the route, until his repatriation could be arranged. Frederic (Mikaela's skiing partner) and another climber from another team also came to help, and once we reached the bottom of the route, we split into two teams; one who'd actually go and retrieve the body from the slope (where it remained on a potentially dangerous section), and the other team who'd dig a grave in the ice at the bottom. I volunteered to help dig the shallow pit in the ice, and we finished just in time for the body to be brought down and gently lowered into the grave - wrapped in a bivy bag. It wouldn't be appropriate of me to write publicly about exactly what was said and done, but once a few words had been said, we all helped in pushing the ice on the side of the grave back over the body.
