White stuff…
February 2nd, 2009 by Jake
Is there any other possible title for today’s post?! Having just got back from a weeks skiing, it’s rather nicely ironic to now be snowed in and not be able to move the car! Anyway, let’s go back a little first...
On the 16th I gave a talk at the Hilton in Birmingham to the Contact 2008 Conference for Nurserymen, which went down very well – lot’s of puns about not ‘resting on their laurels’ in 2009! It’s always great to see how that regardless of the audience’s profession or industry, my message is always well received and identifiable with, especially in these times of universal hardship and challenges.
That weekend was spent at Malta Barracks in Aldershot doing a rather heavy yet vital course on electronic defence writing and general Officer stuff – all part of the TA post commissioning training.
My 25th birthday on the 20th was spent speaking at Oundle School near Peterborough to their geography department. I celebrated my birthday a couple of days later in London, with a great group of mates, some of whom I hadn’t seen for years. I would like to make a formal apology now for my ridiculous dancing at a certain club on Lots Rd, but I hope that everyone enjoyed themselves – I certainly did!
On the 23rd I drove out to Verbier in Switzerland to take part in Ex Snowfox, the Yeomanry ski championships. The beautiful resort had had a lot of snow throughout the week, and we were blessed with perfect blue skies for most of the week. We had some fantastic off-piste skiing, great ski-safari and lots of fun in the snowpark, followed by a day of ski-orienteering and then a final day of ski racing, which catered for all abilities, from those who considered themselves experts, to those who’d never put on skis before. Naturally good days on the slopes were followed by even better nights off the slopes, and we didn’t have much sleep throughout the week!
Having arrived back at home at 4am yesterday morning, I’m looking forward to some more lectures and events throughout Feb, 2 weeks in Morocco in March and the run up to a rather exciting expedition this summer... more details to follow!
In the meantime, drive carefully, enjoy the snow and now that we’re firmly into 2009, get going on those dreams for this year!
