Finally all over… (thank goodness!)
June 22nd, 2008 by Jake
At 12.40pm today I reached the top of Brown Willy (no tittering at the back please!), my 82nd and last English County highpoint. Despite having not been the most exotic expedition I've ever undertaken, this has certainly been an epic hill-bagging road-trip. 82 Counties and 2803 miles of driving in 7 days, 4 hours and 20 minutes. Big shout out to Wally, Saskia and Beany, who all gave up their (relatively) precious time to come and help drive/navigate/provide company and banter - I couldn't have done it without you guys. This trip reinforced my belief that our country is incredibly varied and beautiful, and we are very lucky to have it all on our doorstep. Highlights for me include: chips in Blackpool at 2am, being marooned on the Isle of Wight, being 'shot at' in Co. Durham, being nearly blown off Black Chew Head in Greater Manchester and an encounter with an unhelpful ginger farmer in Northamptonshire! I can't believe that my poor little car survived the journey unscathed (we wrote off 4 vehicles when we did the same around the USA!), although I think that I might need to invest in one of those pine-scented air-fresheners! Most importantly, I'm now looking forward to chilling for a couple of days, and no more driving...!

A little windy on top of Dunkery Beacon (no. 78), the highest point in Somerset!
