Obscure Sports – Woolsack Racing

May 28th, 2008 by Jake
Gloucestershire obviously had a mass exodus of worthwhile celebrities over the Bank Holiday weekend, as they asked me to be the starter for the 2008 Annual Woolsack Race. I may joke, but actually it was a tremendous honour to follow in the footsteps of Sharon Davis and Tina Hobley (Holby City) at such a prestigious event.

Armed with 'nought more than an air horn, it was 'on your marks, get set and BLAAAAAA' for one of the UK's most (wonderfully) obscure sporting events. Imagine running up and down a 1:4 gradient hill with a 60lbs hessian sack of wool on your shoulders - and new for this year: hurricane force winds and torrential rain!

There were thrills, spills, and knobbly knees galore (and that was just from the crowd!), and I think that the abundance of cider or ‘Woolsack Ale’ and the Snooty Fox’s BBQ lifted everyone’s spirits no end! Even Rory McGrath and Paddy McGuinness (Phoenix Nights) turned up with camera crew in tow to have an attempt!

Next time you’re kicking your heels on Whitsun Bank Holiday Monday, come and check it out – you won’t fail to be disappointed!
